France's Macron wins strong majority for reform

France's Macron wins strong majority for reformPresident Emmanuel Macron was poised to forge ahead with pro-EU, business-friendly reforms Monday after his centrist party redrew France's political map with a resounding victory in parliamentary elections. Although it fell short of a predicted landslide, Macron's Republic on the Move (REM) and its centrist ally MoDem won 350 seats in the 577-seat National Assembly after Sunday's runoff vote. The result also means REM can if necessary govern without the support of MoDem, which won 42 seats.

Why people are calling on 'clean-shaven white men' to condemn London mosque attack

Why people are calling on 'clean-shaven white men' to condemn London mosque attackAn incident near Finsbury Park Mosque in London in which a man died and 10 people were injured after a man drove a van into worshippers is being treated as a "terrorist attack," Met Police confirmed.  The first media reports were naturally wary of describing it as a terror incident — the headline on the first BBC story was "Vehicle hits pedestrians in Finsbury Park" — as they were waiting for more details to trickle in.  SEE ALSO: J.K. Rowling made a huge correction to this 'Daily Mail' headline However, one media organisation overreached with a really weird tweet: "Clean-shaven white man arrested by police as at least 10 people are injured."  Clean-shaven white man arrested by police as at least 10 people are injured https://t.co/LUPrhpeSi5 — Daily Mail U.K. (@DailyMailUK) June 19, 2017 It was just a matter of time until people on Twitter weighed in, underlining the perceived double standard The Daily Mail and other tabloids have when reporting about Islamist attacks:  I just don't understand why the clean-shaven white male community didn't alert the authorities? https://t.co/M7aoKXOucI — Ian Sinkins (@iansinkins) June 19, 2017 People called on the "clean-shaven white male community" to condemn the attack, just like it routinely happens with Muslims: When will the clean-shaven white male community condemn this attack? — Sagar Patel (@EatTheBurrito) June 19, 2017 BREAKING: man tries to kill people based on religion, thought he was a terrorist but turns out he's clean shaven https://t.co/cSixnV8RhW — farha (@shutyourhell) June 19, 2017 So if I got this headline right—we should ban all clean shaven white men from driving until we can figure out what's going on?#FinsburyPark pic.twitter.com/jBw62nI60D — Qasim Rashid, Esq. Why not freshly showered? Or bright eyed? Disgusting. — Wardah Khalid (@wardahkhalid_) June 19, 2017 Others tried to fix the headline for The Daily Mail: Fixed it! #FinsburyPark pic.twitter.com/cQa11ancdS — asīā (@asiaxxo) June 19, 2017 Other people condemned the attack on behalf of the "clean-shaven white male" community': As a clean-shaven white male, I condemn this attack on behalf of my people #FinsburyPark https://t.co/zZgxvqaiuc — Matt Sterling (@MSterling27) June 19, 2017 Glad we have that important detail of "clean shaven" before "white," the most important descriptor which changes the entire media coverage https://t.co/m2htvfKpB7 — Wajahat Ali (@WajahatAli) June 19, 2017 While there were some people who asked important questions about his fade: How fresh was his fade? https://t.co/fmMPVjCMcb — Shafik Mandhai (@ShafikFM) June 19, 2017 WATCH: Grand Central is crowded — something this woman didn't like in her review
