Apple’s MacBook Pro dongle sale ends today, but there are cheaper options anyway

Apple’s MacBook Pro dongle sale ends today, but there are cheaper options anyway

When Apple introduced its revamped MacBook Pro lineup last fall, the backlash was immediate. From complaints about a 16GB ceiling on RAM to concerns about the utility of the Touch Bar, many developers and creative professionals were quick to categorize Apple's new notebook lineup as overpriced and under-powered.

Many Apple enthusiasts also took umbrage with the design of the MacBook Pro itself, specifically lambasting Apple for removing a number of beloved and useful ports, including the MagSafe 2 charging port, the HDMI port, and the standard USB port. Instead, Apple's new MacBook Pro design featured four Thunderbolt 3/USB-C ports, effectively forcing many users intent on maintaining their workflow to invest in any number of dongles.

Acquiescing to customer complaints about Apple's port revamp, Apple last November began offering users significant discounts on various dongles to help ease the pain.

Conceding that the new MacBook Pro might require a period of transition, an Apple spokesperson at the time said: “We recognize that many users, especially pros, rely on legacy connectors to get work done today and they face a transition. We want to help them move to the latest technology and peripherals, as well as accelerate the growth of this new ecosystem.”

Apple's dongle sale was only supposed to last until 2016, but Apple, showing its users some mercy, decided to extend its adapter and dongle sale until March 31.

Translation? If you have a MacBook Pro and are keen on picking up one of Apple's many dongles at a nice discount, you'll want to act today.

Now if you're not ready to make a purchase today or are perhaps looking for even better savings on various MacBook Pro dongles, there are a number of affordable alternatives available on Amazon that you might want to check out as well.

Listed below are a few of the better deals we've seen in recent weeks.

Priced reasonably at $26, you can pick up the AUKEY USB C Hub 3 which features 3 USB 3.0 Ports, 1 Ethernet port, and 1 Type-C input charging port. The AUKEY USB C Hub 4, meanwhile, offers up 4 USB 3.0 ports, 1 HDMI port and 1 Type C input charging port for just $43.

For an even more affordable option, HooToo's USB C Hub retails for just $12 and features 3 USB 3.0 ports and an SD Card reader.

New York mayor says violence-torn jail complex to closeNew York City's massive Rikers Island jail complex will close in as little as 10 years, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced on Friday, saying falling crime levels had paved the way toward shuttering the troubled facility. The decision by the Democratic mayor follows a 9 percent drop in the city's overall crime rate over three years, and an even larger drop in the inmate population. "If we can continue on that trajectory, it will allow us to get off Rikers Island," de Blasio told a City Hall press conference.

A word of warning to anyone who hasn’t already updated to iOS 10.3

A word of warning to anyone who hasn’t already updated to iOS 10.3

Earlier this week, Apple put an end to the beta madness and released iOS 10.3 to the public. Don't worry, a new developer beta — iOS 10.3.2 — was promptly released the very next day. We already told you about all the best new features in iOS 10.3, and we also drew attention to one feature in particular, a hidden change that gives the iPhone and iPad a nice little speed boost. If you haven't already updated though, there's one feature that we should warn you about because we've received a handful of emails from people who have run into some serious problems.

Among the behind-the-scenes changes in iOS 10.3, Apple's move to a new file system is clearly the biggest. Prior to iOS 10.3, all iOS devices used the popular HFS+ file system. Beginning with iOS 10.3, however, Apple has moved to the more modern Apple File System (APFS).

There are a number of advantages to switching to Apple's new file system, but the big ones are better optimization for NAND flash storage and SSD storage, more accurate time stamping, and support for stronger encryption. HFS+ is 30 years old at this point, so it was clearly time for a change.

Here's the problem, however: once you update your phone to iOS 10.3 and your file system is converted to APFS, you can no longer roll back without wiping your phone and reinstalling an older iOS build. Why is that significant? Because if something goes wrong and you roll back to an older build, you'll no longer be able to recover data because everything will have been converted to APFS.

So, a word of warning: Back. Up.

If you haven't already upgraded to iOS 10.3, be sure to back up all of your data before you do. This can be done either with iCloud (Settings > iCloud > iCloud Backup > Back Up Now) or by backing up using iTunes. It might take a little while, but waiting a few minutes while your iPhone backs up is much less aggravating than losing some or even all of your data.

Using the Congressional Review Act, which allows lawmakers to repeal recently minted regulations, senators killed a rule intended to keep federal grants flowing to clinics that provide contraception and other services in states that want to block the funding. The rule was enacted in the final weeks of former President Barack Obama's administration, giving lawmakers the opening to nullify it under the review law.

"Most of the building is for civilian purposes, including necessary defensive facilities." The South China Sea is generally stable at present, but some countries outside the region are anxious about this and want to hype things up and create tensions, Wu said, using terminology that normally refers to the United States.

Elon Musk explains why drivers won’t care about the Model 3’s bizarre dashboard design

Elon Musk explains why drivers won’t care about the Model 3’s bizarre dashboard designWhen Tesla unveiled the Model 3 last year, tech and auto observers couldn't help but notice that the car lacked an instrument cluster. Instead, Tesla representatives suggested that drivers would be able to ascertain all the information they needed right from the car's 15-inch tablet located on the center console. Because the design Tesla showed off was so outside the norm, many Tesla enthusiasts began speculating that Tesla must have a cool and advanced design it was planning to show us later on down the line. This speculation was only fueled by coy remarks from Tesla CEO Elon Musk who said via Twitter that everything would all make sense soon enough. Responding to a question about the lack of a dashboard/HUD, Musk last April said that "it will make sense after part 2 of the Model 3 unveil." Of course, part 2 of the Model 3 unveil came and went and we still didn't hear anything about Tesla's plans for the dashboard area. Meanwhile, speculation surrounding Tesla's plans to incorporate a futuristic HUD on the Model 3 began to grow wildly. Looking to keep expectations grounded, Musk over the past few days has come out and said that the Model 3 will not have a HUD and that users won't really care. https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/846768171486855169 https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/846768497904369664 Musk later added that drivers don't need an instrument cluster on the dash because "the more autonomous a car is, the less dash info you need." Driving the point home, Musk asked the following question: "How often do you look at the instrument panel when being driven in a taxi?" All that said, the Model 3 dashboard will more or less look like this. While such a design may make sense in a world where cars are fully autonomous, the reality is that many drivers today not only want, but need quick and easy access to pertinent information like range, speed and more. Addressing this, Musk took to Twitter once again where he explained that the final Model 3 design will display such information on the center console. https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/847178475970547712

Completely insane architects are planning to hang a skyscraper from an asteroid

Completely insane architects are planning to hang a skyscraper from an asteroidWords like "insane," "crazy," and "nuts" get thrown around a lot — I use them more than my fair share, if I'm being honest — but a New York design group just revealed plans for a new type of skyscraper that really can't be described any other way. Their plan is to construct a huge structure on the surface of an asteroid and, believe it or not, that's probably the most rational part of the proposal. Clouds Architecture Office is the firm that wants to build the massive skyscraper, which it calls Analemma Tower. The structure, which at this point is completely conceptual and likely completely impossible, would require that an asteroid be captured and brought into near-Earth orbit. With anchor points on the asteroid, the building is designed to — this is the part where things go completely off the rails — hang completely upside down, using the asteroid like a gravitational balloon to hold the structure in place above the Earth's surface. The tower would be in eccentric geosynchronous orbit, and would "travel" between hemispheres on a regular daily schedule, and in a figure eight pattern. The architects say the tower would spend much of its time over New York City thanks to its planned trajectory. The building could remain completely disconnected from the surface indefinitely by drawing power from solar panels situated above cloud level. Water would be filtered within the structure in a semi-closed loop, but the tower could also capture its own water while in-flight. As far as traveling to and from the tower, the concept suggests that people could just parachute down to Earth whenever they needed to leave. As for getting back home, the company doesn't seem to have nailed down exactly how that will work, but by the time the tower is actually built we'll probably have teleportation pads, too.

Senate intelligence leaders pledge bipartisan Russia probeBy Patricia Zengerle WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The leaders of the U.S. Senate Intelligence Committee jointly pledged on Wednesday that their investigation of Russian hacking of the 2016 U.S. election campaign would be bipartisan, a sharp contrast to bitter partisan disagreements surrounding a similar investigation in the House of Representatives. Burr declined to go along at this point with the White House's denial of collusion between the Trump campaign and Russian hackers, who U.S. intelligence officials believe sought to influence the election for the Republican Trump at the expense of his Democratic challenger, Hillary Clinton.
